Description: Michael Parkinson and Dickie Bird watch Barnsley v Bradford, 1997

Michael Parkinson: Born in Cudworth, near Barnsley, Yorkshire (March 1935). Parky as he is familiarly known, began as a journalist on local newspapers, and also worked as a reporter on the Manchester Guardian and later on the Daily Express in London. In the 60's he moved into TV, with current affairs programmes for BBC and Granada. Parkinson, shown on BBC One, initially ran from 1971 to 1982. In 1982 he left the BBC to be co-founder and presenter on the ITV breakfast TV station TV-am, where after much upheavals he ended up presenting the Sunday morning programme with his wife Mary Parkinson. He returned to the BBC in 1995 to present Parkinson: The Interviews featuring excerpts from Parkinson, eventually presenting a new, revived version of his chat show on BBC One three years later. In September 2004, with an identical set, theme-tune and format to the BBC version, ITV unveiled the new Parkinson show.

Dickie Bird: Harold Dennis Bird was born on the 19th April 1933. Born a son of a miner in Barnsley, he gained his name Dickie from school. He was always interested in sports and wanted to be a football player, but an injury to his knee at school put paid to that and he followed his second love, cricket. He first played for Barnsley, and then in 1956 moved to Yorkshire, then Leicestershire. Dickie retired from cricket and became an umpire in 1970. He was awarded an M.B.E. in 1986, and later given an Honorary Doctorate from Leeds Sheffield Hallam University.
